Pink&Green Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Well, not that it didn't already feel like summer...

(Good lord, it got up to 96 degrees here in Alabama, before we left for Orlando!)

...but now...

...with the official beginning of summer having taken place while we were gone...

...& with all of the summery-feeling activities&items we enjoyed on our little summer vacation...

I am feeling oh, so summery!

So this week's Pink&Green Thursday post is devoted to sandals!

Wishful Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

"I wish..."

I hadn't lost my Bobbi Brown cosmetic brush collection.

I don't think you can even buy the collection that I had anymore. I bought it 2008, after I had a Bobbi Brown makeover done at my favorite boutique in the city we used to live in.

(all available at Bobbi Brown cosmetics)

The collection that I had contained all of those brushes, & they were all full sized. It also had a lip brush that is apparently no longer available (mine doesn't retract). I think there was a bronzer or powder brush of some kind that I hadn't used either - I don't remember because I didn't use it! I had also purchased the powder puff, separately from the collection, for applying the sheer finish loose powder from my creamy concealer kit. The brushes came in a black faux-leather zip-around case that had a billion little pockets for brushes, even more than the brushes it came with.

The last time I remember having the case was back in March. I know that I had it to apply makeup while My Prince was driving us to a party. I think I remember having it in my vehicle that following Monday morning, when Pretty Little Bare Feet & I were going to&from our playgroup.

(She often sits on the master bathroom counter, & plays with my [unopened] cosmetics while I am getting ready, & I *think* I remember taking the case from her & putting it in my tote...)

Anyway, I am not sure if I misplaced the case somewhere, or if Pretty Little Bare Feet got it & put it somewhere...but after a month or two of looking for it, we gave up & decided to replace the brush collection. It pained me, though, as I hadn't really looked at the cost of the collection when I first bought it - I probably wouldn't have bought it if I had thought about it! & there were a couple of brushes in the collection that I didn't even use. But when we looked for the collection that I had, we couldn't find it available anywhere. & just replacing the brushes I used, a la carte, was going to end up costing more...

Sooo...I ended up putting together

a random hodgepodge of cosmetic brushes,
some from Bobbi Brown,
some from other brands.

It was kind of a big pain to put a cosmetic brush collection back together piece by piece, & I had just bought conditioning brush cleanser to clean my old brushes when they got lost! So that is why I wish I hadn't lost them!

So here is what my new (but sadly, not improved) "collection" consists of:

(Mine is actually green, but whatever, I guess that's different now, too! I use it for my HD microfinish loose powder by Make Up For Ever, which is seriously some of the best stuff ever created!)

(I use it for my brows.)

Cosmetic Bag by Bobbi Brown Cosmetics

(I got this little baby from somewhere - Neiman Marcus, I think? Anyway, when I got it, it had a mini brush collection with it, which included the blush brush, eye shadow brush, & eye liner brush that I had before I lost my collection. But they're mini-sized, which makes me kind of sad. *sniff*)

Mini Eye Applicator Set by Sephora Collection

I also bit the bullet & replaced the full sized original versions of my concealer brush & eye shader brush from Bobbi Brown cosmetics. I was lucky enough that neither my original powder puff nor my original lip brush was in the case that went missing. So I still have both of those.

Sunshine Cuties Clear Pencil Case by Harajuku Lovers at Sephora

(Well, you know...since that little Bobbi Brown cosmetic case that I got couldn't hold the full sized brushes, I had to get a new pencil case to hold all of my brushes&pencils.)

Page in Hip Hop Hooray Print by Lilly Pulitzer for LeSportsac

&...

*Drum roll, please!*

Today My Prince went & picked up my beloved, long-awaited Lilly for LeSportsac train case.

Hip Hop Hooray! Guess who's reorganizing her cosmetics tonight!

(Now...to do a post on the actual *contents* of my makeup collection?! Or is that OCD overkill?!)

Pink&Green Thursday, Disney Edition 2010

Well, since we are soon embarking on our big adventure to Orlando, I thought I'd devote this week's Pink&Green Thursday to the Mouse himself.

I can't really envision carrying this for myself...I am pretty sure I've grown out of both my Minnie Mouse accessory & my Dooney&Bourke phases.

But I believe my very first "designer" handbag was a Dooney&Bourke, which I received as a gift from my father&stepmama when I was all of about ten years old. I carried it pretty much all the time, for at least three years or so, & loved it until its worn-out death. That was back when they had the little duck head on the front, remember? & you could tell a faux knockoff from the real thing by making sure the little duck's head was turned in the proper direction? Anyway, Dooney&Bourke's popularity faded, at least where I lived, until they had a resurgence at some point when I was in college, & I acquired a couple more.

But while the occasional colorful Coach handbag still catches my eye, I've been spoiled by carrying a Rebecca Minkoff handbag for too long - now I seem to think I can't "go back."

But even though I can't picture myself carrying this little pouchette, it is something I can absolutely see Pretty Little Bare Feet carrying around in a few years. I am not so silly as to actually buy her one when she is this young! That's one of the reasons I've held onto some of my old handbags&wallets - she can play with carry those until she's older!

No, I am not planning on adding these to my regular golf wardrobe - not that there would be anything wrong with anybody doing that! I am just not sure I am young enough to dress with characters adorning my clothing anymore - even subtly! But I do think they'd be adorable, even on somebody my age, if I were playing golf - or maybe even just sightseeing - while we were at Disney World!

Yes, there is in fact a matching dress for women...

But I just don't think I could do it. Maybe. I am not opposed to occasional matching. I love the idea of Pretty Little Bare Feet & me wearing some of the matching Lilly Pulitzer dresses for mamas & their Minnies. But I believe most of those dresses are generally designed just a bit differently, so that a toddler isn't wearing the exact same fit&style of dress that her mama is wearing, even if the print is the same.

I'd certainly have to try it on & see...

...but either way, that pink&green Mickey Mouse dress for girls is as cute as can be!

I'm pretty ticky about the "Disney princess" trend. It's that whole annoyed by characters that are oversaturating the market hangup of mine...but I'm not opposed to all Disney princesses. I just have a preference for more classic, understated clothing&toys for Pretty Little Bare Feet. & that sweet little pink bodysuit fits my bill. ;)

Custom Boutique Lime&Pink Polka Dot Minnie Mouse Halter&Capri by Lil' Bug Clothing

Well, we did already buy a little pink&green personalized mouse ears tshirt for Pretty Little Bare Feet. & it's a bit late to buy this little outfit to pack in the suitcase...but oh, how adorable. This little shop definitely just got added to my Etsy favorites!

Do go & check out another fabulous Lilly Pulitzer giveaway going on from our Pink&Green Thursday host, Pink Preppy Lilly Lover. She is giving away

a Lilly beach towel,
& Lilly drink umbrellas;
& a Lilly Pulitzer for LeSportsac umbrella!

What I Want This Weekend, Budding Gymnast Edition 2010

Here are some pretty things I've come across this week, for our pretty little budding gymnast,

from some blog
or catalog
or friend
or magazine
or another;
or just from my own browsing&shopping&surfing,

that I need to convince My Prince to dole out the cash for...

Okay, okay, I know what you're thinking.

Really, Sara?
You're one of those mamas?
The one that pushes her toddler into every activity or lesson you can find within a sixty-mile radius?
Who hovers over her tot during the class to make sure she does everything perfectly,
& then remarks loudly enough for everybody around her to hear about her child's "gifted, natural talent?"

No, I promise that is not me. You do not have to unfollow me, on principle. I am not that mama.

(However, I do know those mamas. A couple of those mamas inspired the aforementioned playgroup coup of 2010.)

But I will concede, that as a full-time stay-at-home mama, I am all about finding someplace to go during weekday mornings. Since I am not a big fan of having the television on, it helps both Pretty Little Bare Feet & me to get out of the house - both to avoid being stir-crazy & to meet people. & since toddlers love their routines (&, I admit, so does this mama!), it is also helpful to have consistent destinations with familiar faces.

Last summer, when Pretty Little Bare Feet was all of about five months old, we attended a local baby fair with our newest parentfriends. We had met Clint&Mary when we were all waiting for tables at a new local pizza restaurant. It was quite the wait, & our Pretty Little Bare Feet was striking up quite a flirtation with their Handsome Little Keko.

We ended up talking to the couple,
discovering they were also relatively new to the area,
& exchanging numbers.

I met up with Mary for several playdates/shopping trips before we ended up joining a local chapter of MOMS Club together.

(Handsome Little Keko & Pretty Little Bare Feet, about eight months ago)

Months later, we ended up in the same playgroup (& yes, we're still in the same new playgroup), & our toddlers still adore each other.

Anyway, it was such a relief to meet Mary & start getting involved in our new local community. Our babies were just getting to the age where they were becoming more active, & neither of us mamas had been venturing out as much as we wanted to. At the baby fair, I got information about parent-child gymnastics classes & agreed to show up for a free introductory class.

(Pretty Little Bare Feet loved it!)

& I enjoyed meeting other (mostly stay-at-home) mamas. So we've been progressing in these classes, with perfect (although not always punctual) attendance ever since.

Pretty Little Bare Feet has actually done really well in the little classes. Her first pediatrician once remarked at one of her checkups (maybe at six months?) that she was remarkably strong, with particularly strong muscular skills for such a short, tiny thing. He actually suggested then that she might naturally excel at gymnastics, although his remark didn't really register until I saw Pretty Little Bare Feet doing her thing at this little gym.

Anyway, we haven't taken it especially seriously - it's just another of our places to go during the week, like playgroup or storytime at the library. But in mid-April, Pretty Little Bare Feet surprised us. During "exploration time" one day, while I was chatting with a momfriend, Pretty Little Bare Feet

pulled herself up onto the shorter balance beam,
gripped the little rail that runs parallel to it,
pushed herself up to stand,
& then let go to stand freely on the balance beam.

This one is a little bit lower than the standard beam, but it is the same (narrow) width.

When she saw us watching,
she clapped for herself,
which tested her balance
& sent her wobbling;
but she caught herself on the rail again
& recovered.

I didn't know whether to be horrified or proud, until the sweet instructor remarked to me that she was amazed that Pretty Little Bare Feet had done that by herself. & she was proud of me for allowing Pretty Little Bare Feet to be independent enough to try it for herself.

Within the last few weeks, Pretty Little Bare Feet has begun walking the beam by herself.

Now she is even climbing the stairs to the standard balance beam. But she at least recognizes that she can't quite trust herself to walk on it yet, without somebody guiding her.

When Pretty Little Bare Feet starts her little Montessori nursery school classes in the fall, we'll be moving on from some of our little routines. She'll be getting storytime there instead of at the library, & I'll be doing some of my errands without her in tow (bittersweet). She'll have two days a week off from nursery school; & on one of those days, we'll be attending our normal playgroup.

I'd still like to have a "free day." But since her nursery school class only meets for three hours each morning, only three days a week...I think I'm just about going to have to allow for us to continue scheduling gymnastics classes - at least for as long as she continues to enjoy it so much & show such an ability for it. In fact, after some encouragement from the impressed instructors, to "move her up" to the next level class (which she is still at least three months too young for); My Prince & I have begun to realize that we may just need to look into a tumbling program at a "real" gym, if we are actually going to keep this up. If not on our "free day," then before or after nursery school or playgroup...

...but nothing else! I've got to study for the bar exam, & my head will spin if I let anything else fall onto our regularly scheduled plates! & I want our family to have plenty of downtime, too!

So anyway, that's the (long) story behind the desire to get a balance beam for Pretty Little Bare Feet to play&practice on at home. She's fallen twice this week, both here at home & at Mary's house, trying to make the couch her own personal balance beam.

So I love that colorful one that I posted up there, with its options for building different constructions.

& I love that one that looks like a crayon, too!

& the pretty one that looks like a log in the flower garden.

But I have a feeling that Pretty Little Bare Feet would be happier with something that looks more like "her" balance beam. & that she would probably benefit more from something that will give her the chance to really practice her little craft.

& well, let's be honest...

...even though I strive to create a laid-back existence for our family,
with a slower pace...
...I am a type-A,
go-go-go girl at heart.

& if Pretty Little Bare Feet ends up wanting to pour her little heart into gymnastics, there are a lot of awfully cute (girly!) little incentives:

Gymnastics Personalized Large Tote Bag by Pixietails Boutique

Personalized Girl's Gymnastics Lunch Box by Shell's Simple Stitches

Gymnastic Rings Girl Personalized Pillowcase by the Southern Pineapple

Flower Fairy on Pink Leotard by Whimsy Ranch

But really...

...as long as she remembers that she is a girl;
& that in our house,
we don't do the androgynous boys&girls-aren't-different stuff;

I'll be perfectly content to chauffeur Pretty Little Bare Feet back&forth to whatever it is she chooses to focus on.

Even if she just wants to choose library books to curl up & read beside me on the couch!

T.G.I.F.! What do YOU want this weekend?

Pink&Green Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Get well soon, Trish!

Next Monday I am hosting a fabulous celebratory playgroup.

We are celebrating, ahem, our independence.

Proper menu planning will be tricky, however, as three of the six mommies in my playgroup are pregnant.

(Not me!)

So, for the other three of us, brunch cocktails, woo hoo!

pear&cranberry bellini

(source: Martha Stewart)

(yield: 8 servings)

  • 1 cup pear nectar
  • 1 cup cranberry juice cocktail
  • 1 bottle Prosecco or other dry sparkling white wine
*In a small pitcher or large liquid measuring cup, combine pear nectar & cranberry juice cocktail. Pour 1/4 cup juice mixture into each of eight champagne glasses. Dividing evenly, top with Prosecco or other dry sparkling white wine.

For the mommies-to-be, mocktails!

(& "rainchecks" for the real cocktails at a later date!)

pomegranate-citrus juice

(source: Whole Living)

(yield: 3 servings)

  • 2 small grapefruits
  • 2 juice oranges
  • 2 tangerines or mineola tangelos
  • 1/2 lime
  • 2 pomegranates
*Use a citrus press or a juicer to juice the grapefruits, oranges, tangerines, & lime. Juice the pomegranates (2/3 cup juice) into a separate bowl. Divide citrus juice among 3 glasses. Top with pomegranate juice, which will settle to the bottom, & serve.

(I just bought those glasses & that trifle bowl from a friend who is a Pampered Chef consultant!)

So guess what else is on the menu...trifle for all!

grand raspberry trifle

(source: Martha Stewart)

(yield: 10 servings)

  • 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 1 cup seedless raspberry jam
  • 4 cups raspberries
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 1/2 pounds favorite pound cake
*In a small saucepan, bring 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup water, & lemon juice to a boil, stirring to dissolve sugar, 1 to 2 minutes. Let cool.

*In a small bowl, combine jam with 3 cups raspberries, mashing slightly. In a large bowl, whip cream & 2 tablespoons sugar to stiff peaks.

*Slice pound cake 3/4 inch thick; brush both sides of slices with lemon syrup.

*Fit 1/3 of slices snugly in the bottom of a 4-quart trifle dish or other glass bowl, trimming edges if necessary. Gently spread top of layer with 1/3 of raspberry mixture, & then 1/3 of whipped cream. Repeat to make two more layers; garnish with remaining cup raspberries. Refrigerate until ready to serve, up to 24 hours.

(Actually, I don't even like raspberries - I'd probably make this with strawberries! But I was determined to find a trifle that would fit Pink&Green Thursday!)
